Hotel Staff and Guests of Jordan Grand Resort Hotel Shocked by Static Electricity
WATERTOWN, MA, February, 24, 2009—The guest key cards at the Jordan Grand Resort Hotel, located at the Sunday River Ski Area in Newry, Maine, were malfunctioning. The keys failed to open the doors to guest rooms, requiring guests to call for help or return to the reception desk to have their key cards reset. Staff and guests were also experiencing static shocks when they walked on carpeted hallways in the hotel.
According to Chris Hughes, a static flooring specialist at StaticWorx, Inc., the problem was caused by a phenomenon called tribo-generation. When people walk across a carpeted floor, the friction that occurs when their feet contact and separate from the carpet generates static electricity. “Generic carpets can’t dissipate static, so when people walk on the carpet, static builds on their bodies,” Hughes said. Many of the resort’s guests carry their key cards in their pockets. The static accumulated on their bodies transferred to the card, clearing programmed information.
Spraying the carpets with inexpensive, easy-to-use TriboShield antistatic spray solved the problem. It also eliminated the static shocks experienced by the resort’s staff and guests. The “hotel is now static free,” said Sylvester Ruggerio, of Sunday River ski resort. “ No key card problems or resetting locks.”
